Scandium oxide (Sc2O3) is one of the most important scandium products. Its physicochemical properties are similar to rare earth oxides such as La2O3, Y2O3, and Lu2O3, so the production methods used in production are very similar. Applications
Applications in alloys
At present, aluminum scandium alloy (Al SC) made of scandium and aluminum has the advantages of low density (Sc is 3.0g/cm3, Al is 2.7g/cm3, high strength, high hardness, good plasticity, corrosion resistance, and strong thermal stability. Therefore, it has been widely used in structural components such as missiles, aerospace, aviation, automobiles, and ships, and gradually shifted to civilian use, such as sports devices (hockey and baseball handles), computer and phone cases, which have high strength The characteristics of high stiffness and light weight have great practical value.
Scandium mainly plays a role in modifying and refining grains in alloys, resulting in the formation of a new phase of Al3Sc type with excellent performance. Al-Sc alloys have formed a series of alloy series, such as 17 Al-Sc series in Russia, and several alloys (such as Al-Mg-Sc-Zr and Al-Zn-Mg-Sc alloys) in China. The characteristics of this type of alloy cannot be replaced by other materials, so from a development perspective, its application development and potential are great, and it is expected to become a major application in the future. If Russia has industrialized production and is developing rapidly for lightweight structural components, China is also accelerating research and application, especially in the fields of aerospace and aviation, with the best prospects.
Application of New Electric light Materials
The new third-generation Electric light material is made by converting pure Sc2O3 into ScI3 and NaI, and then processed into scandium sodium halide lamp for lighting (0.1mg~10mg of material with Sc2O3 ≥ 99% is used for each lamp). Under the action of high-voltage electricity, the scandium spectral line is blue, and the sodium spectral line is yellow. The two colors interact to produce light close to the sun, making the lamp have the advantages of high luminosity, good light color, power saving, long life and strong fog breaking force.
Application in Laser Materials
Gadolinium scandium garnet (GGSG) can be prepared by adding pure Sc2O3 ≥ 99.9% to gadolinium garnet (GGG), which forms the Gd3Sc2Ga3O12 type. The third-generation laser made of it emits an emission power 3.0 times higher than lasers of the same volume, achieving high-power and miniaturized laser devices, increasing the output power of laser oscillation, and improving the performance of the laser. When preparing single crystals, each furnace charge is between 3kg and 5kg, and the addition of Sc2O3 ≥ 99.9% raw material is about 1.0kg. At present, this type of laser is increasingly widely used in technology and is gradually being promoted to civilian industry. From a development perspective, there is great potential for both and civilian applications in the future.
Applications in Electronic Materials
Pure Sc2O3 can be used as an oxidizing cathode activator for the cathode electron gun of color television tubes, with good results. Spray a millimeter thick layer of Ba, Sr, and Ca oxide on the cathode of the color tube, followed by a 0.1 millimeter thick layer of Sc2O3. In the oxide layer cathode, the reaction between Mg, Sr, and Ba promotes the reduction of Ba, releasing more active electrons that emit high current electrons, causing the phosphor to emit light. Compared to cathodes without Sc2O3 coating, the current density can be increased by four times, making the TV picture clearer and increasing the cathode lifespan by three times. The amount of Sc2O3 used for each 21 inch imaging cathode is 0.1mg.
